UTAH, UNITED STATES — Business leaders in the United Kingdom are entering 2026 with a powerful combination of confidence and international hiring momentum that sets them apart from global counterparts, according to new research from BambooHR.

An international survey of 780 senior decision-makers across the United States, UK, Canada, and Australia reveals that UK executives are not only the most optimistic about growth—they are translating that outlook into aggressive global talent acquisition, global expansion, and strategic investment in technology that signals a fundamental shift in how organizations approach the future.

International hiring takes center stage

The optimism is manifesting in concrete hiring plans. More than a third (38%) of UK leaders describe themselves as “enthusiastic and proactive” about international hiring—the highest rate recorded—while a mere 2% opposed the practice, compared to 8% in the U.S.

The data suggests international hiring capability builds on itself. Across all regions, companies already hiring across borders are more than twice as likely to feel confident in further global expansion (51% vs. 26%).

UK firms appear to have internalized this dynamic: 40% say they are “very confident” in their ability to expand internationally, which is by far higher than the confidence levels of respondents in Australia (18%), Canada (23%), and the United States (23%).

UK employment outlook outpaces major economies

When UK respondents were asked about their prospects for growth over the next year, 84% were optimistic, compared with 80% in Australia, 79% in the U.S., and 68% in Canada.

This is not just a momentary surge of positivity, but a significant upward trend. Statistics show that 70% of UK leaders are more optimistic than they were 12 months ago. This is the highest recorded increase among the regions surveyed, with the U.S. following at 66%, Australia at 64%, and Canada lagging at 53%.

This is notable resilience, given the global economic situation. Despite global economic uncertainty and the trend of policy changes, cited as major concerns among business executives in 2025, UK respondents do not appear to be particularly discouraged.

Among the four countries sampled, UK leaders recognized global economic uncertainty as a key factor to shape their future prognosis next year (only 19%).

This indicates that the UK leadership assumes the relative robustness of the local economy and the natural capacity of their companies to overcome complications in the international market, considering external factors as significant variables rather than insurmountable obstacles.

The report notes, “Optimism is powerful, but confidence in execution drives action. And the UK leads decisively here, reinforcing the view that UK organizations see expansion as an accessible goal.”

Revenue growth drives UK cross-border employment

The push for international hiring is tied directly to top-line ambition. Forty percent of UK leaders cite revenue growth as the primary pressure driving global expansion—the highest of any region and nearly double Canada’s 21%.

Access to skilled talent (41%) and opportunities in emerging markets (46%) also rank as significant motivators. To support these goals, UK businesses are investing in infrastructure that enables sustainable cross-border employment.

They lead all regions in planned spending increases on technology and software subscriptions (53%) and research and development (45%), with 42% indicating they are more likely to purchase or switch HR software providers than last year.

Future of work: Managing AI and rising labor costs

The path to expansion includes notable pressures. UK leaders report the highest labor cost challenges among the surveyed regions, with 22% citing wages and benefits as their largest cost increase—double the U.S. rate (11%) and well above the Canada rate (12%).

In a highly competitive domestic job market, strategic decisions about hiring models have become essential to managing profitability.

Furthermore, AI presents both opportunity and unease. While UK leaders view AI as a key revenue driver, it is also their greatest source of concern: 18% say AI is the factor most likely to keep them up at night, more than any other region, highlighting the need for governance and thoughtful implementation.

The report concludes, “When hiring strategy, onboarding systems, and technology investments align with expansion goals, confidence becomes capability—and capability drives sustainable growth.”

The UK’s outsized confidence heading into 2026 suggests the future of work may be shaped not only by expansion and tech investment, but by how effectively businesses turn AI ambition and rising labor costs into durable, well-governed growth.
