Health systems must prepare for AI’s reinvention of work

NEW YORK, UNITED STATES — The biggest disruption artificial intelligence (AI) will bring to health systems is a wholesale reinvention of how work gets done, according to Eric Langshur, co-founder of Abundant Venture Partners, in an interview with FierceHealthcare.

22 health systems co-develop AI solutions

The Abundant Alliance, a collaborative backed by 22 health systems including MedStar Health (medstarhealth.org), Henry Ford Health, ChristianaCare, and Northwestern Medicine, was built to give health systems a more active role in evaluating, co-developing, and investing in AI-driven solutions.

Member organizations function as co-developers and early adopters, receiving equity in the companies built through the Abundant platform. Abundant Venture Partners has started 16 companies to date, selling 14.

Langshur and the Alliance are pursuing a measured, operationally grounded strategy rather than high-risk bets on transformative technology. The model prioritizes incremental gains to build sustainable value for member health systems.

“We’re very humble and practical. We think the way to score runs is like the Billy Beane approach — let’s hit singles,” said Langshur, co-founder and managing partner of Abundant Venture Partners.

The Alliance’s co-development model positions health system members to shape AI tools during the design phase, rather than evaluating vendor products after release.

Workforce upskilling from boardroom to breakroom

Langshur frames the AI transition as a workforce challenge as much as a technology one. Through a partnership with the American Hospital Association (AHA) (aha.org), the Alliance is developing role-specific training curricula covering doctors, nurses, finance executives, and board members.

The program is designed to ‘upskill all their people from the boardroom to the breakroom’ with delivery tailored to each role’s specific needs.

“AI is by all accounts a seismic technology shift that has come along that’s changing everything about the way we work and live,” said Langshur.

Health systems must also build governance systems that address safe AI deployment, efficient token utilization, and updated cybersecurity protocols alongside any rollout.

For healthcare outsourcing providers, the Abundant Alliance model reflects a shift in how health systems are engaging with administrative and operational AI. Revenue cycle management (RCM), clinical documentation, and workforce training are among the functions where AI-augmented workflows are being co-developed and tested across the Alliance’s 22-member network.

Outsourcing firms that embed governance frameworks, upskilling programs, and AI-ready operational teams into their service offerings are better positioned to meet health systems where this transition is heading. The reinvention Langshur describes is not a future event — it is already underway at the organizations co-developing it.
