Workers fear for junior roles more than their own: Anthropic

CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES — More than a third of workers in Anthropic’s Economic Index survey rated the probability of a junior colleague losing their job within a year above 60%, compared to just 10% who considered their own job loss likely, according to the June 2026 Anthropic Economic Index report on artificial intelligence (AI) usage patterns and worker sentiment.

Junior role anxiety outpaces self-concern across Anthropic survey data

The Anthropic Economic Index June 2026 report, covering approximately 9,700 survey respondents linked to Claude usage data, found that concern concentrates on junior rather than senior roles, with 35% of respondents expecting AI to handle most or nearly all of their work tasks within 12 months.

Early-career workers reported the highest share of tasks AI could perform among any segment surveyed, and expressed the most displacement concern of any group, indicating junior workers themselves anticipate the compression their more senior colleagues are projecting onto them.

The survey establishes a clear inversion: workers are more anxious about junior colleagues’ jobs than their own, and early-career workers share that anxiety most acutely.

AI users report productivity and skill gains

The report stated that “Claude sessions now increasingly consist of long-running agentic tasks,” reflecting a shift from simple queries toward complex, multi-step workflows that change how entire roles are scoped.

86% of respondents reported productivity gains in speed, 82% in scope, and 69% in quality from AI assistance, according to the report.

68% reported learning more through AI use, and 57% said their skills became more valuable as AI handled routine tasks.

Workers who delegate the most to AI report the greatest career optimism, contradicting the assumption that higher AI exposure correlates with greater job insecurity.

The Anthropic data confirms an inversion: those using AI most intensively report expanding roles and growing skills, while those with the least exposure report the highest displacement anxiety.

The junior-displacement anxiety Anthropic documents creates structural demand for offshore staffing pipelines in the Philippines and comparable markets, where early-career workers are entering the workforce as AI-native practitioners rather than AI-threatened incumbents.

Business process outsourcing (BPO) operators that build AI augmentation into managed delivery represent exactly the model the Anthropic data identifies as generating the highest career optimism among workers.

Leading BPO operators that treat AI as a productivity multiplier rather than a headcount substitute are positioned to attract clients seeking managed teams that outperform disengaged in-house workforces navigating AI anxiety.
