Filipino firms push grad education as AI rises

CEBU, PHILIPPINES — Companies in Cebu, Philippines are sponsoring workers through master’s degree programs as artificial intelligence (AI) adoption accelerates across global capability centers (GCCs), with approximately 200 Philippine GCCs employing 270,000 professionals in 2025 and projecting a workforce of 289,000 in 2026 as roughly half experiment with or deploy generative AI in production.

Philippine GCCs sponsor graduate degrees as AI reshapes job requirements

Shannen Keisha Tan, director of Ateneo de Manila University’s Cebu Satellite Campus, asked “With the growth of AI, how do you make sure that you are still relevant?” as a report by SunStar Cebu found both employer-sponsored and self-funded employees in the Philippines pursuing graduate business education to build skills in critical thinking, leadership, and complex problem-solving that AI cannot fully replicate.

The Philippines hosted approximately 200 GCCs employing around 270,000 professionals in 2025, with the sector projected to reach 289,000 workers in 2026, as roughly half of those centers were already experimenting with or deploying generative AI in production by the time demand for graduate credentials began accelerating.

AI deployment inside Philippine GCCs is translating directly into graduate enrollment demand as professionals invest in credentials that anchor their value above the automation layer.

Human-plus-AI model drives graduate education push in Cebu

Tan said “The majority really see it as an investment in themselves, really upskilling,” describing the employee motivation behind the shift as a “human-plus-AI” approach in which advanced degrees position workers to direct and supervise AI tools rather than compete with them.

Ateneo de Manila University’s Cebu Graduate School of Business delivers MBA coursework in hybrid format, with Saturday in-person classes and weeknight online sessions designed for working professionals in GCC and BPO roles who cannot step away from full-time employment.

The industry-academia collaboration Tan’s institution promotes connects directly to the talent pipeline for offshore outsourcing and business process outsourcing (BPO) capacity, where leading BPO operators rely on the critical thinking and AI-supervisory skills that graduate business education develops.

The “human-plus-AI” framing signals that Philippine GCC and BPO workers are positioning themselves as AI supervisors, building graduate credentials that make offshore delivery more competitive as AI tooling becomes standard.

GCC and BPO operators sponsoring graduate education are investing directly in the AI-supervisory workforce that high-complexity offshore delivery requires.

For enterprise buyers evaluating Philippine offshore capacity, a workforce pursuing graduate credentials alongside AI tools represents a more durable option than AI adoption without the human judgment layer.

The self-funded enrollment trend Tan describes signals that Philippine talent is actively positioning for roles AI cannot fully occupy.
