Jamaica’s BPO sector sheds 12,000 jobs in two years: opinion

KINGSTON, JAMAICA — Jamaica’s business process outsourcing (BPO) sector has contracted from approximately 62,000 workers to under 50,000 in two years, shedding roughly 12,000 positions as artificial intelligence adoption among global service organizations and broader sector pressures combine to reshape the country’s outsourcing industry.

Program lead for Market Entry USA, writing in the Jamaica Gleaner, sector spending also fell from US$1 billion to US$780 million in the fiscal year ended March 2026, a US$220 million contraction in annual revenue for the Global Digital Services sector, according to Yaneek Page.

AI-driven cost pressure and sector shifts narrow Jamaica’s BPO workforce

Contact-centre outsourcing is the segment most exposed to AI substitution, and the scale of adoption in the industry is accelerating.

Salesforce reported that AI-agent adoption among surveyed service organizations rose from 39% to 66% in a single year, an increase that reflects the pace at which organizations are replacing or reducing human headcount in voice and chat support functions.

Gartner projected that conversational AI would reduce global contact-centre labor costs by US$80 billion by 2026, a projection that frames Jamaica’s workforce contraction as part of a structural global rebalancing rather than a country-specific performance problem.

The result in Jamaica’s commercial real estate market is visible: more than 245,000 square feet of large-format commercial office and BPO-oriented space is currently on offer across Kingston and Montego Bay, as companies downsize or exit footprints built around headcount models now being automated.

Jamaica’s government targets a shift from BPO to higher-value KPO services

The Jamaican government is projecting revenue growth of 9.1% for BPO and 18.4% for knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) in its forward estimates, a divergence that reflects the official strategic ambition to move the local industry mix from an 80:20 BPO-to-KPO ratio toward a 60:40 split.

KPO services, which include research and analytics, legal process outsourcing, and financial analysis, command higher billing rates and are less directly exposed to AI substitution in contact-centre workflows than voice-based business process outsourcing (BPO) operations.

Jamaica’s English-language proficiency and proximity to North American time zones remain structural advantages that apply equally in KPO as in BPO, and the government’s 60:40 target treats those advantages as portable rather than locked into the specific job categories AI is now replacing.

For enterprise buyers evaluating offshore delivery options in the Caribbean, Jamaica’s sector transition is both a risk signal and a reorientation indicator.

Companies relying on established BPO partners in Jamaica should assess transition plans; companies evaluating new outsourcing destinations in the Caribbean can weigh Jamaica’s KPO pivot as a signal that higher-skill services capacity is being deliberately built, even as lower-margin voice BPO contracts.
