AI steps up to bolster cyber defenses – Google
CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES — With cyber threats escalating, businesses are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to strengthen defenses, according to Google.
“Generative AI is now being used to identify threats faster, handle the increased volume load of events, and better support security analysts,” said Mark Johnston, Director at Google Cloud’s Office of the Chief Information Security Officer.
Data from IBM and Mandiant revealed that the Asia-Pacific region, which faced 31% of global cyberattacks last year, took a concerning 33 days on average to detect intrusions. It also took 200,000 hours a year to respond to attacks, with over 3,500 threat actors monitored.
Johnston emphasized AI’s potential, with machine learning already eliminating 2.5 times more browser-based device attacks for Google.
“We used to require very skilled software engineers to understand particular threats,” he said. “AI tools can improve detection and provide mitigation of bad pieces of code that would have previously gone undetected.”
The Director acknowledged AI’s ability to help small businesses lacking resources or experts, but still warned on privacy concerns.
