AI boosts creativity but risks less unique ideas, study finds

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM — A recent study has found that AI prompts, specifically those generated by ChatGPT, can enhance the creativity of amateur writers. However, this boost in creativity may come at the cost of producing fewer unique ideas.
“It may be individually beneficial for you to use AI, but as a society if everyone used AI, we might all lose out on the diversity of unique ideas,” said Prof. Oliver Hauser, a co-author of the research from the University of Exeter.
“And, arguably, for creative [endeavors] we might sometimes need the ‘wild’ and ‘unusual’ ideas.”
AI’s impact on individual creativity
The study from the University of Exeter and University College London involved 293 participants who were tasked with writing short stories.
Some writers were given AI-generated prompts from ChatGPT, while others worked independently. A panel of 600 judges rated stories created with AI assistance as more innovative and valuable.
They rated the stories on factors such as novelty and usefulness using a nine-point scale. The study, published in the journal Science Advances, showed that access to AI ideas significantly improved these scores. Participants with the option of five AI-generated ideas saw an 8.1% increase in novelty and a 9% rise in usefulness compared to those without AI assistance.
“The effect sizes are not very large, but they were statistically significant,” noted Dr. Anil Doshi, co-author of the study from University College London.
Stories with AI-generated ideas were found to be more enjoyable, likely to have plot twists, and better written overall. However, the study revealed that the benefits were most pronounced among writers with low inherent creativity.
“We do not find that the most inherently creative people’s stories are being ‘supercharged’ from AI ideas – this group of people is highly creative with and without the use of AI,” Doshi explained.
The social dilemma of AI in creative writing
While AI boosted individual creativity, the research uncovered a concerning trend.
Stories written with AI assistance showed increased similarities, potentially due to the predictable nature of AI-generated ideas. This finding raises questions about the long-term impact of AI on creative diversity.
Hauser emphasized the importance of such research in understanding the broader implications of AI.
“Evaluating the use of AI will be essential in making sure that we reap the benefits of this potentially transformative technology without falling prey to potential shortcomings,” he said.
