Amazon introduces AI-enhanced van technology to streamline deliveries

WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES — Amazon is set to revolutionize its delivery process with the introduction of an innovative AI-powered technology called Vision-Assisted Package Retrieval (VAPR).
The e-commerce giant plans to deploy 1,000 electric delivery vans equipped with this cutting-edge solution by early 2025, aiming to reduce the time and effort drivers spend locating packages during deliveries.
Streamlining the delivery process
VAPR utilizes advanced computer vision technology to identify and highlight packages for each delivery stop.
When a van arrives at a location, the system automatically projects a green “O” on packages to be delivered and a red “X” on those for later stops.
This visual cue eliminates the need for drivers to manually organize packages or read labels, streamlining the entire delivery process.
Impressive time and effort savings
The technology has been in development since 2020, incorporating feedback from drivers to refine its functionality.
According to Amazon, VAPR can save drivers up to 30 minutes per route, significantly improving delivery times. Early tests of VAPR also showed a 67% reduction in drivers’ perceived physical and mental effort.
Bobby Garcia, a driver with Bloomfield Logistics who has been testing VAPR in North Boston, Massachusetts, shared his experience: “Before, it could take me anywhere between 2 and 5 minutes to empty a tote and organize packages for the next stops. Now, with VAPR, this whole step just takes me about a minute. It’s made my life so much easier.”
Part of Amazon’s broader AI and robotics push
The deployment of VAPR aligns with CEO Andy Jassy’s emphasis on practical, near-term innovations that improve operations and cost efficiency. This shift in strategy reflects Amazon’s effort to optimize delivery processes in a competitive market.
Amazon’s 390,000 drivers operate a fleet of over 100,000 vans, collectively delivering millions of packages daily worldwide. With VAPR, the company aims to enhance efficiency across its expansive delivery network.
The future of Amazon deliveries
In addition to VAPR, Amazon recently introduced other AI-driven tools, including shopping guides and an AI-integrated fulfillment center in Louisiana, while expanding same-day prescription deliveries across the U.S.
As Amazon continues to refine its logistics operations, VAPR represents a significant step forward in enhancing the driver experience and improving delivery efficiency. With this tech-forward approach, the company is poised to maintain its competitive edge in the rapidly evolving e-commerce landscape.
