NEW YORK, UNITED STATES — The Commonwealth Fund’s newly released 2024 State Scorecard on Women’s Health and Reproductive Care revealed stark disparities in women’s healthcare across the United States.

The report ranks Massachusetts, Vermont, and Rhode Island as the top-performing states, while Mississippi, Texas, and Oklahoma are among the poorest performers.

Significant gaps in women’s healthcare

The scorecard, which evaluates all 50 states and the District of Columbia using 32 measures, highlights significant gaps in healthcare access, affordability, quality, and outcomes for women.

The findings underscore the growing impact of the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade on reproductive health services. It also found disparities in healthcare access and outcomes in various states, including:

  • Health system performance: The lowest-ranked states for women’s health care are Mississippi, Texas, Nevada, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. In contrast, Massachusetts, Vermont, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire lead the rankings.
  • Maternity care providers: States with abortion restrictions often have fewer maternity care providers. For instance, Arkansas and Oklahoma have the fewest providers per 100,000 women of reproductive age, while the District of Columbia and Vermont have the most.
  • Uninsured rates: Women of reproductive age in Texas, Georgia, and Oklahoma have the highest uninsured rates, whereas those in Massachusetts, D.C., and Vermont have the lowest.

Rising health concerns

The report also notes an alarming increase in syphilis infections among women of reproductive age, particularly in South Dakota, New Mexico, and Mississippi.

Additionally, maternal death rates are highest in the Mississippi Delta region, which includes states with full abortion bans, like Arkansas and Louisiana.

Sara Collins, the study’s lead author, emphasized the urgency of addressing these disparities.

“The scorecard’s findings are deeply concerning and underscore the urgent need for federal and state policies to expand women’s access to affordable, timely reproductive care and other essential health services,” Collins stated.

Meanwhile, Commonwealth Fund President Joseph Betancourt highlighted the geographical disparities as many states fail to ensure women can get and afford the health care they need.

The role of telehealth in women’s health

Telehealth emerged as a crucial tool in expanding healthcare access for women, particularly in underserved areas.

Research indicates that telehealth interventions provide comparable outcomes to in-person care for various women’s health services, including contraceptive care and intimate partner violence (IPV) services

The convenience and flexibility of telehealth make it especially attractive to women, who are more likely to use these services due to their caregiving responsibilities and busy schedules

Aside from these, telehealth services offer:

  • Accessibility: Telehealth can reach women in remote or rural areas where healthcare facilities are scarce. This is particularly important for reproductive health services, which have been affected by limited in-person care.
  • Convenience: Women can access healthcare services without the need to travel, saving time and reducing the risk of exposure to illnesses. This is especially beneficial for women with caregiving responsibilities or those with mobility issues.
  • Cost-effectiveness: Telehealth can reduce healthcare costs by minimizing the need for physical infrastructure and enabling more efficient use of healthcare resources.

Offshore staffing in healthcare

Offshore staffing offers another avenue to expand healthcare access and improve efficiency. By outsourcing certain healthcare tasks, such as medical transcription, billing, and administrative support, healthcare providers can focus more on patient care.

Similar to telehealth, offshore staffing could offer various health systems the following advantages:

  • Cost reduction: Offshore staffing can significantly reduce operational costs, allowing healthcare providers to allocate more resources to patient care and essential services.
  • Enhanced efficiency: Offshore professionals can handle non-core tasks, freeing up local healthcare staff to concentrate on direct patient care. This can lead to improved accuracy, minimized errors, and better compliance with healthcare regulations.
  • Scalability: Offshore staffing provides the flexibility to scale operations up or down based on demand, ensuring that healthcare providers can adapt to changing needs without compromising service quality.

The 2024 State Scorecard on Women’s Health and Reproductive Care paints a concerning picture of women’s health in the U.S., with significant disparities based on geography, race, and income. The report calls for urgent policy interventions to ensure equitable access to essential health services for all women.

Combining telehealth and offshore staffing can significantly enhance healthcare access for women, particularly in underserved and remote areas. These strategies offer cost-effective, efficient, and flexible solutions to address the growing disparities in women’s healthcare.
