NEW YORK, UNITED STATES — In a pioneering move within the industry, the Associated Press (AP) is teaming up with OpenAI to explore generative artificial intelligence (AI) utilization within news reporting.

AP will license some of its news story archives to OpenAI as part of this innovative collaboration. This step aims to enhance the abilities of AI systems like ChatGPT, known for their proficiency in various tasks, from summarizing legal documents to writing computer code.

While the specifics of incorporating OpenAI’s technology into AP’s operations remain under wraps, the news organization already employs AI to automate tasks such as corporate earnings reports, sports event summaries, and live event transcriptions.

This partnership could serve as a blueprint for future collaborations across various sectors.

Kristin Heitmann, SVP and Chief Revenue Officer at AP, emphasizes the significance of generative AI for the news industry.

“News organizations must have a seat at the table… so that newsrooms large and small can leverage this technology to benefit journalism,” she stated.

Several news outlets are already integrating generative AI into their content. BuzzFeed, for example, uses AI for its personality quizzes, while the New York Times employed ChatGPT for a Valentine’s Day message generator.

OpenAI’s COO, Brad Lightcap, is optimistic that AP’s input and access to their factual text archive will greatly enhance OpenAI’s systems.
