BPO poised to boost employment in Indian state

SHILLONG, INDIA — Shillong Chief Minister Conrad Sangma predicts a surge in job creation and technological innovation due to the rapid growth of the region’s Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector.
Speaking at Shillong College’s Diamond Jubilee celebration, SSangma underscored the growing role of the digital economy in the region. He asserted that Shillong is on track to becoming a notable BPO hub in the region, aiming for national prominence in the near future. He also revealed the interest of several companies in investing in the state, indicative of the potential growth in the IT and innovation sectors.
Sangma highlighted the importance of the green economy and sustainability in tandem with economic growth, expressing the government’s commitment to creating green jobs.
Plans for constructing the next phase of a 5000-seat IT Park are underway. “My target is to see that we can touch about 30,000 seats in the IT sector by getting investments from outside and be able to take advantage of the situation,” Sangma added.
In his final comments, Sangma revealed the government’s plan to enhance connectivity by laying optical fiber cables at the block level. Plans are also in motion to construct one of the region’s largest data centers.
“There is a high probability that very soon in collaboration with the government of India, government of Bangladesh, government of Assam and the government of Meghalaya together will be able to get submarine cables land here in Shillong,” the chief minister concluded.
