BPO industry advances UN SDGs with climate focus in 2025

MANILA, PHILIPPINES — The global business process outsourcing (BPO) industry is taking sustainability to new heights, deepening its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through initiatives that go beyond traditional corporate social responsibility.

The recent Outsourcing Impact Review (OIR) 2025 by Outsource Accelerator highlights how outsourcing firms worldwide are aligning their operations and innovations with global sustainability priorities—from climate action to inclusive economic growth.

BPO firms lead in climate, education, and economic growth

According to the OIR 2025 report, SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) emerged as the top focus areas, with over 90% of participating projects aligned with these goals.

“This strong engagement with climate, education, and work-related goals echoes the pressing need for environmentally conscientious practices, empowering knowledge ecosystems, and sustainable economic pathways within the outsourcing sector,” the report stated.

The report also found that industry engagement extends beyond these leading SDGs, with more than half of participants contributing to goals related to SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 5 (Gender Equality)

This broadened coverage signals a growing awareness of how business operations can create systemic social value.

“Industry attention to SDG 10 and SDG 5 reflects an evolving focus on equity and inclusivity, mirroring global demands for more diverse, just, and inclusive workplaces,” the report added.

Building on past progress: A three-year sustainability trajectory

The OIR 2025 findings show clear progress from previous years. In OIR 2023, the industry’s sustainability efforts were largely concentrated on SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and SDG 4 (Quality Education), with limited focus on environmental goals such as SDG 13 (Climate Action)

That year, the outsourcing sector was primarily recognized for its contribution to employment generation, workforce upskilling, and health and well-being programs—early signs of a socially aware but still maturing sustainability agenda.

By OIR 2024, the industry’s priorities had expanded to include stronger community-building and inclusivity programs aligned with SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 5 (Gender Equality)

The growing emphasis on diversity, equity, and social cohesion demonstrated that BPOs were evolving from isolated CSR efforts into more integrated, community-based sustainability practices.

Now, in 2025, the inclusion of SDG 13 (Climate Action) among the top three goals marks a pivotal leap forward.

The industry’s attention has shifted from primarily social and labor goals toward a more balanced model that embraces environmental responsibility and long-term planetary well-being—an area once seen as underrepresented in earlier reports.

Embedding sustainability in outsourcing practices

The OIR 2025 reveals a marked shift from ad hoc charitable projects toward embedding sustainability directly into outsourcing business models.

Companies are increasingly integrating renewable energy use, digital education access, and gender-inclusive recruitment into their operational frameworks. Several firms are also pioneering efforts in addressing poverty (SDG 1), hunger (SDG 2), and responsible consumption (SDG 12).

The data in the report reinforces this transformation: “100% of participants believe outsourcing yields positive societal impact,” and a growing number are motivated by transparent and measurable sustainability goals that align with both corporate strategy and community welfare.

BPOs set the pace for responsible, inclusive growth

The growing SDG alignment positions the global outsourcing sector as a vital force in shaping a more sustainable global economy. By embedding responsibility into core business functions, BPOs are redefining what it means to be both profitable and purpose-driven.

From the workforce-centric priorities of 2023 to the community-focused strides of 2024 and the climate-conscious expansion of 2025, the trajectory is clear—the BPO industry is maturing into a true partner for sustainable global development.

As the OIR 2025 suggests, sustainability is no longer a side initiative but a central pillar of competitiveness and innovation in the global outsourcing landscape.
