Broadcom CEO enforces office return

CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES — In a significant policy shift following Broadcom‘s $69 billion acquisition of VMware, CEO Hock Tan laid out strict return-to-office requirements.
In an internal all-hands meeting, Tan told employees, “If you live within 50 miles of an office, you get your butt in here.”
The semiconductor and infrastructure software company only allows remote work for customer-facing roles like sales.
“Any other exception, you better learn how to walk on water if you want to work remote. I’m serious,” Tan warned.
Tan cited the importance of in-person collaboration and sustaining company culture. The directive aligns with Tan’s past commentary urging VMware employees to return to offices.
The hybrid work-friendly VMware had worried about culture clashes with Broadcom pre-acquisition. Broadcom laid off some VMware workers post-close and Tan indicated further reviews of business units.
