Brunei outsources patent processing to the Philippines
MANILA, PHILIPPINES — Brunei Darussalam recently tapped the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) for its expertise in patent search and examination services.
In a strategic move to enhance patent processing efficiency, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was formalized in December, marking a five-year collaboration between Brunei’s IP Office (BruIPO) and IPOPHL.
The agreement stipulates that IPOPHL will annually manage the search and examination of up to 200 patent applications from Brunei.
Additionally, the Bureau of Patents at IPOPHL will offer re-examination services, respond to patent amendment oppositions, and support BruIPO in adopting best practices for patent processing.
IPOPHL Director General Rowel Barba expressed pride in the partnership, highlighting the Philippines‘ long-standing experience and the trust placed in its patent processing capabilities.
He emphasized the country’s quick patent processing times and adherence to international quality standards.
“We hope this partnership will create more wins for innovation in the ASEAN and serve as a global model for collaborations with meaningful outcomes,” Barba added.
The MOU was signed by Barba and Brunei Darussalam Attorney General and BruIPO Registrar Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Ahmad Bin Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Bakti Di-Raja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Isa.
The partnership is seen as a benchmark for international cooperation, fostering innovation and economic recovery efforts within the ASEAN region post-pandemic.
