Businesses, households exposed to more cyberattack threats
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) revealed that reported cyber incidents were higher today compared with pre-pandemic levels. While digital transactions are becoming rapidly popular, it also exposes businesses and households to an increased threat of cyberattacks.
The central bank did not provide specific figures, but last year, internet security firm Kaspersky said that the number of new malicious applications collected increased to 400,000 during the pandemic from 300,000 previously.
BSP also noted that phishing attacks remain as the top cybersecurity concern. Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) Head of Enterprise Information Security Management and Data Privacy Jonathan B. Paz said there has been a surge in COVID-themed phishing attacks in 2020. Victims fall for phishing sites with promises of cures and vaccine prioritization.
