ChatGPT blamed as Stack Overflow cuts staff by 28%
NEW YORK, UNITED STATES — Renowned programming platform Stack Overflow announced plans to cut 28% of its workforce this week, citing industry disruption from ChatGPT as a key factor.
CEO Prashanth Chandrasekar said the layoffs are part of achieving profitability amid “threats to customer budgets” in the tech industry. He also cited the company’s push into AI products like OverflowAI.
Though Stack Overflow did not directly mention ChatGPT’s impact, the AI tool’s launch coincided with plummeting traffic to Stack Overflow.
“People stopped using Stack Overflow after ChatGPT was released,” said tech expert Tony Dinh on X (formerly Twitter). He illustrated Stack Overflow’s traffic declining over 50% after ChatGPT’s release. Many users are turning to AI for convenient coding assistance.
The layoffs come after Stack Overflow doubled its staff last year. While painful, Chandrasekar says the cuts “best [position] us to succeed” on AI initiatives like OverflowAI.
Founded in 2008, New York-based Stack Overflow has over 1000 employees and connects over 50 million developers worldwide. Its question-and-answer format empowers users to share programming knowledge.
