Chinese cities compete for digital nomad talent

BEIJING, CHINA — Remote workers are becoming valuable assets for China‘s local development, particularly in rural areas where their presence bridges technological gaps and stimulates economic growth.
Policy initiatives
Lishui, in Zhejiang Province, has taken a bold step by introducing “Eight Measures to Support Digital Nomads” along with a comprehensive co-creation plan. The city offers substantial incentives, including rewards and subsidies reaching up to 300,000 yuan ($41,099) for digital nomads who contribute to local development.
Other cities like Wenzhou, Ziyang, Huangshan, and Meizhou have followed suit with their own initiatives to attract these modern professionals.
Local business boost
Digital nomads bring more than just their laptops – they contribute significantly to local economies through extended stays and integration with communities.
“Digital nomads are not just short-term visitors but a group that can stay for extended periods. They often have a strong interest in local culture, history, and natural landscapes, seeking a deeper experience that integrates work and life,” Yang Jie, a tourism planner at the Shanxi Cultural Tourism Digital Experience Museum told the Global Times.
Zhang Yi, CEO of the iiMedia Research Institute, explains: “In many rural areas, traditional industries often lack advanced thinking and modern technology applications. Digital nomads can help modernize local industries and support the integration of rural tourism and cultural development”.
Cultural exchange
In Yunnan’s Mandiu Ancient Village, hostel owner Lu Boke has witnessed firsthand the positive influence of digital professionals on local youth. “Many of the non-local young professionals come from major cities like Beijing and Shanghai, and they are often highly skilled and outstanding in their fields. This makes them valuable examples for local youth, who need guidance and inspiration to grow and improve”.
The initiative represents a strategic move by Chinese cities to harness the potential of remote workers while promoting rural revitalization and cultural preservation.
