Claro pours $53Mn into Caribbean network upgrade

BARRANQUILLA, COLOMBIA — Claro, a Latin American telecommunications provider, has announced an investment of nearly $53 million to upgrade and expand its fixed and mobile networks in Colombia’s Caribbean and Atlantic regions.
Speaking at the Claro Tech Summit in Barranquilla, Claro Colombia president Rodrigo de Gusmao confirmed the company will spend the amount between 2024 and 2025 to improve fixed and mobile infrastructure across La Guajira, Magdalena, Cesar, Atlántico, Bolívar, Sucre, Córdoba and the island territory of San Andrés.
The program supports about 24,000 regional clients—ranging from SMEs to heavy industry—with connectivity, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and cloud services.
Fiber optic and 5G coverage expansion
Claro has already delivered 1.55 million fiber optic access points in coastal municipalities such as Ciénaga, Sabanalarga, Sahagún and Magangué.
Barranquilla’s own fiber footprint has expanded 157 percent to 530,000 addressable connections, while the AMX-1 submarine cable landing in Puerto Colombia, Cartagena, and San Andrés now helps the island log average download speeds near 250 Mbps—among Colombia’s top five.
On the mobile side, 4G now reaches 197 municipal capitals, and 5G is live in nine cities, including Riohacha, Santa Marta, and Cartagena. Claro has modernized 235 4G base stations this year and will upgrade another 299 in 2025, covering venues from Ernesto Cortissoz Airport to the Barranquilla Carnival parade route.
CloudWise opens the multicloud door
Claro, the flagship brand of Mexican telecom giant América Móvil, also launched CloudWise by Claro Empresas, a managed services suite that pairs local, 24/7 Spanish-language support with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and AWS.
The offer spans automation, server migration, AI model development, and enhanced cyber defense, giving coastal businesses a single point of contact for multicloud adoption.
