Deloitte urges HR reinvention

NEW YORK, UNITED STATES — Professional services giant Deloitte has called for a major shift in how human resources (HR) operates, advocating for it to become “boundaryless” and embedded throughout organizations.
The 2024 Global Human Capital Trends report, which surveyed 14,000 executives across 95 countries, found that 53% believe their company should move beyond inputs and towards outputs, as well as ensure that work adds value to employees’ lives. Only 8% said their organization leads in this transformation.
The report also highlights a concerning gap between awareness and action regarding HR’s evolution. While 72% of respondents recognize the necessity of integrating HR into every aspect of the business, only 41% are actively pursuing this goal. Deloitte argues that overcoming this “knowing vs. doing” gap is crucial for achieving both desired business and human productivity outcomes.

Deloitte suggests reimagining the role of Chief Human Resources Officers (CHROs) as “chief work officers,” emphasizing the development of a workforce proficient in people skills, transforming managers into people leaders adept at coaching, and encouraging workers to co-create HR strategies rather than just consume policies.
This approach not only aims to tackle the high rates of burnout but also to foster an environment where trust and co-creation between employees and leaders are paramount.
“Boundaryless HR can develop people-discipline expertise and weave it throughout the fabric of the business, creating multidisciplinary solutions to increasingly complex problems”, according to Deloitte’s 2024 report.
Art Mazor, global human capital practice leader at Deloitte, said it’s time to put humans back at the center of work. “After all, it is humans, more than any physical assets, that drive business performance.”
