Denmark tops global remote work index
NEW YORK, UNITED STATES — Denmark has been named the best country in the world for remote workers, according to The Global Remote Work Index 2023.
The study was published by New York-based business cybersecurity provider NordLayer and provides key insights for remote workers looking for the best places to live and work abroad.
Despite having a high cost of living and expensive internet, Denmark scored highly across areas like social inclusiveness, internet quality, social safety, e-government, and healthcare.
The Netherlands and Germany took second and third place respectively in the rankings. Germany was noted for its robust legal measures around cyber safety, coming first globally on that specific indicator.
European countries dominated the top ten positions in this year’s index. Canada was the first non-European nation at number 14, followed by the United States at 16.
The report highlighted that the highest ranking countries tend to have higher costs of living.
Portugal stood out as offering strong value, with its high 6th place ranking combined with a relatively low 56th place cost of living. Portugal’s popularity with remote workers has reportedly driven up accommodation costs.
Several Asian countries including Singapore, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates led the way in digital and physical infrastructure. Japan (10th) and South Korea (12th) were also praised for social safety.
Analysts used H1 2023 data to rank 108 countries on cyber safety, economic safety, infrastructure and social safety. Denmark came first overall based on its performance across the categories.
