DICT looking to deploy Starlink by Q1 2023
The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is set to deploy the Starlink broadband service to geographically isolated and disadvantaged communities by the first quarter of 2023.
DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy revealed that they are already preparing all the documentation and requirements so it will be ready to launch early next year.
Starlink is a satellite internet service operated by Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX). It uses a low-Earth orbit satellite system designed to deliver broadband internet connectivity with speeds of 100 to 200 Megabits per second to isolated and disadvantaged areas where laying fiber cables is difficult.
Uy said that with Starlink’s service, it will be cheaper to provide connectivity to unserved and underserved areas in the Philippines.
SpaceX Government Affairs Senior Manager Rebecca Hunter said that the service will be offered for $599, while the monthly service will be $99.
Because of the pricing, Uy noted that the DICT, in partnership with local government units (LGUs), will initially cover the cost of providing Starlink service in remote areas to help Filipino farmers and fisherfolk to participate in the digital economy.
The DICT and LGUs are already identifying the areas that will be covered by the program.
