DOE supports 4-day work week

The Department of Energy (DOE) shows support in the four-day workweek arrangement, as well as the Work-From-Home (WFH) extension amid rising oil prices in the Philippines.

During the weekly  Talk to the People briefing, DOE Secretary Alfonso Cusi said that this proposal will prevent people from traveling to and from their workplaces — alleviating their fuel and transport expenses.

National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Secretary Karl Kendrick Chua was the one who originally proposed the adjustment during the same meeting.

This comes after the Fiscal Incentive Review Board (FIRB) denied multiple requests of WFH extension for Information Technology And Business Process Outsourcing (IT-BPO) firms to September this year.

Reacting to this, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Undersecretary Benjo Benavidez said that the implementation of a four-day workweek will not need any new law or Department Order.

He explained that DOLE already “issued a Labor advisory on flexible work arrangements. The four-day workweek is a flexible work arrangement.”

However, Benavidez noted that this work arrangement will not cover any overtime pay as it would be a voluntary agreement between employees and employers.
