UTAH, UNITED STATES — BambooHR’s Q2 2025 Employee Satisfaction Survey reveals that employee satisfaction has reached a high not seen in over two years, with the Employee Net Promoter Score (eNPS) climbing to an average of 40—up seven percent from Q1 and up twelve percent year-over-year.

This marks the largest quarter-over-quarter increase since 2023, based on data from more than 60,900 employees across over 1,740 companies.

The spike in reported workplace satisfaction appears widespread: industries such as construction and finance posted strong gains, while the technology sector saw its highest monthly eNPS since 2023.

Still, researchers and experts suggest a more nuanced picture behind the numbers.

As BambooHR’s Head of HR and Chief Legal Officer Jonathan Vaas observed, “Given the current employment environment, the rise in eNPS scores may indicate an appreciation for job stability more than an upward trend in true employee happiness.”

Vaas highlights that ongoing layoffs, economic uncertainty, and widespread adoption of AI are shaping employees’ perceptions of their workplaces, potentially heightening relief at simply having stable employment.

Satisfaction or stability? Experts weigh in

While average employee happiness has improved on paper, several sources underline that this may reflect a “survival response” to external pressures rather than deeper satisfaction with workplace culture or benefits.

As BambooHR’s survey notes, “This marked the largest quarter-over-quarter increase in over two years and placed employee sentiment back at levels last seen in early 2023.”

However, Vaas adds, “The benefit of eNPS is that it creates a measurable feedback loop over time, giving leaders the opportunity to listen and respond in a way that builds trust.”

The sectors seeing the sharpest increases were also those most affected by earlier layoffs. Smaller companies continued to outpace larger organizations in employee satisfaction, and those with tenure of less than one year or more than 25 years reported the highest levels of happiness.

Cautious optimism for HR leaders

The findings offer both hope and a cautionary tale for HR organizations worldwide. While the data signals some recovery, experts at BambooHR caution leaders to look past surface-level scores and probe the “why” behind them.

“Given the current employment environment, the rise in eNPS scores may indicate an appreciation for job stability more than an upward trend in true employee happiness,” Vaas concluded.

Contrasting data on U.S. worker well-being

In related news, separate data from Gallup and the 2025 World Happiness Report suggest the state of employee engagement and well-being in the United States has reached alarming lows.

Gallup’s latest data showed that only 21% of workers are fully engaged, a 10% drop from last year. Manager engagement also dropped to 27% from 11%, with young managers particularly affected.

Meanwhile, the World Happiness Report ranked the U.S. 24th globally in 2025, marking the first time it had slipped out of the top 20. That places American happiness levels below those of the United Kingdom and just above those of countries like Poland and Belize.

Harvard professor and Atlantic columnist Arthur Brooks highlighted concerning long-term trends

“The nation has actually been in a happiness decline since 1990,” he said, citing declines in family life, friendship, faith, and community service
