Most employers believe AI, VR will create jobs — report

MILWAUKEE, UNITED STATES — A new report from Experis, a global leader in IT professional resourcing and services, reveals that 58% of employers worldwide believe that emerging technologies will generate job opportunities rather than eliminate them.
The report, titled “The Future is Now: AI, the Metaverse, & the World of Work,” emphasizes the rapid transformation of industries due to the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and virtual/augmented reality (VR/AR).
“We are seeing companies embrace these new technologies with many seeking to hire or upskill existing talent to take advantage of potential productivity gains,” said Experis Senior Vice President Ger Doyle.
In the survey, 78% of IT organizations reported challenges in finding skilled talent. To address this issue, more companies are adopting AI (35% adopted, 36% plan to), Conversational AI (35% adopted, 36% plan to), Machine Learning (38% adopted, 34% plan to), and VR (30% adopted, 35% plan to) in their recruiting processes.
Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, Chief Innovation Officer at ManpowerGroup, believes that AI and other technologies automate tasks within jobs rather than replacing entire occupations.
“This isn’t about us versus AI or humans versus machines. Instead, it’s about how we can leverage these tools to augment and upgrade our uniquely human skills and lead a more human-centric life,” Chamorro-Premuzic stressed.
The Experis Tech Talent Outlook, released alongside the report, highlights the shifting priorities for employers. The top five staffing priorities are cybersecurity (34%), technical support (32%), customer/user experience (31%), database management (27%), and customer relationship management systems (25%).
To address these challenges, employers are taking several approaches, including training and upskilling their current workforce (50%), hiring new workers with the required skills (46%), investing in automation (39%), reskilling workers for IT roles (39%), and hiring short-term staff to fill skills gaps (38%).
The findings of the Experis Tech Talent Outlook research are derived from the ManpowerGroup Employment Outlook Survey, which is globally recognized as a crucial economic indicator. The survey involved interviews with 5,978 IT employers from 41 countries, and focused on their hiring intentions for the third quarter of 2023.
