Fiji’s niche BPO, KPO sector on the rise

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA — Fiji’s business process outsourcing (BPO) and knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) sector employs more than 9,000 workers and contributes approximately F$280 million directly to the local economy — and is pivoting toward higher-value services including accounting, financial research, and legal process outsourcing as demand grows from Australian and New Zealand clients.
The sector’s growth is anchored by specialized operators, led by Centrecom, an international BPO provider employing approximately 1,000 workers across four Fiji sites, which is consolidating operations into a new eight-storey headquarters in Suva after expansion outgrew its three existing facilities.
Centrecom expands Suva footprint as traditional BPO demand grows across contact center, finance, and IT helpdesk services
According to a report from Business Advantage PNG, Centrecom’s new Suva headquarters consolidates its three previous Fiji facilities into a single purpose-built site — a capacity upgrade, not a footprint reduction — reflecting growth in contact center, HR, finance and accounting, and IT helpdesk outsourcing from clients who value Fiji’s geographic proximity to Australian and New Zealand time zones.
Fiji’s connectivity dates to 2000, when the Southern Cross fibre-optic cable linked the island nation to international data infrastructure; that foundation, combined with an educated English-speaking workforce, established the offshore delivery capability the BPO sector has built on for over two decades.
Centrecom’s consolidation from three facilities into a single eight-storey Suva headquarters signals commercial confidence: the new building is expansion infrastructure, not operational rationalization, driven by demand growth that has outgrown the company’s existing capacity.
“We don’t want to be the biggest, we want to be the best and we choose our partners carefully,” said Anthony Cassar, Managing Director, Centrecom.
KPO pivot marks Fiji’s shift toward premium-tier services as it avoids head-to-head scale competition with India and the Philippines
Fiji’s KPO segment — covering accounting, financial services, legal outsourcing, and research — is growing as the sector positions itself not as a low-cost competitor to India or the Philippines but as a specialist destination for clients who prioritize cultural alignment, neutral-accent English, and Australian and New Zealand time zone compatibility.
Outsource Fiji, the state-funded promotional body, frames the workforce advantage in those terms rather than on cost.
At 9,000 workers, Fiji cannot compete on volume with Asia’s major BPO destinations — but accounting, legal process outsourcing, and financial research are verticals where specialization and client-cultural fit command premium pricing that volume-based suppliers cannot easily replicate.
Fiji’s BPO strategy is a deliberate size-appropriate bet: grow through KPO specialization and proximity to the Australian and New Zealand markets rather than chasing scale — a model that does not require outcompeting the Philippines to sustain long-term sector growth.
“Our workers are highly educated, have a neutral English accent and a strong understanding of different cultural perspectives,” said Josefa Wivou, Executive Director, Outsource Fiji.
For BPO buyers in Australia and New Zealand evaluating nearshore delivery alternatives, Fiji’s combination of time zone alignment, English-language capability, and emerging KPO specialization positions it as a premium niche market — one growing without replicating the scale or cost structure of Asia’s larger outsourcing destinations.
