Fiji to create BPO training to tackle skills gap, boost outsourcing

SUVA, FIJI — Fiji is tackling a critical skills shortage in its fast-growing business process outsourcing (BPO) sector through innovative education partnerships.
The government, collaborating with Fiji National University, is developing specialized training in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and forensic accounting to create a pipeline of job-ready graduates.
Closing the skills gap in a booming industry
The Fiji BPO sector’s rapid expansion has outpaced the local workforce’s capabilities, leaving employers struggling to fill technical roles.
During his announcement, Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica exposed the current education system’s shortage of specific training programs for BPO skills.
He emphasized the importance of educational reform because our current training methods fail to prepare young workers for entering the workforce.
Fiji National University plans to establish specialized coursework that meets today’s industry demands. The training program delivers both call center operations knowledge and cybersecurity skills to employees before they start work to shorten new employee integration periods and increase staff longevity within the workplace.
This strategic approach addresses both current shortages and prepares for future sector growth.
Elevating Fiji’s position in global outsourcing
Beyond solving immediate labor challenges, Fiji aims to transform its BPO sector into a higher-value proposition.
The curriculum’s emphasis on advanced skills like forensic accounting and AI positions the country to compete for more sophisticated outsourcing contracts. Kamikamica noted this shift could significantly increase wages and career opportunities for Fiji workers.
Niche expertise development enables Fiji to establish unique positions that will resist automated or low-cost competitor encroachment.
Fiji‘s proactive investment in BPO-specific education represents a strategic economic development approach. By directly aligning training with industry needs, the nation positions itself for sustainable sector growth while creating meaningful employment opportunities.
The program’s success will depend on continued government-industry collaboration and adaptability to evolving technological demands in the global outsourcing landscape.
