Fiji’s outsourcing industry targets $500Mn growth by 2034

SUVA, FIJI — Fiji’s outsourcing sector is experiencing remarkable growth, with current foreign exchange earnings standing at approximately $216 million. This growing industry supports around 8,000 employees and is poised for significant expansion in the coming years.
Projected growth and economic impact
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica has projected that the outsourcing industry in Fiji could reach a value of $500 million within the next decade.
Kamikamica expressed optimism about the sector’s potential, stating that there is room for even further growth beyond this ambitious target.
The expansion is expected to have a substantial economic impact, contributing to job creation and increased foreign exchange earnings.
Rural job opportunities, expanding beyong urban centers
A notable trend in the industry is the expansion of outsourcing operations beyond traditional urban centers. Companies are increasingly setting up in areas like Drasa Vitogo, Navua, and potentially Labasa and Savusavu.
This geographic expansion is bringing job opportunities closer to rural communities, providing a boost to local economies and fostering regional development.
Tackling employment challenges in Fiji outsourcing
Despite the positive outlook, the industry faces challenges, particularly in employment. “Some of the challenges that the industry is currently facing is to do with employment,” Kamikamica noted.
The sector is struggling to find workers, which is a concern for its continued growth. Efforts are being made to ensure a steady pipeline of workers to support the industry’s expansion, including training programs and partnerships with educational institutions. Young Fijians, in particular, are urged to join the industry.
Knowledge process outsourcing growth in Fiji
The knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) sector in Fiji is also showing promising development. A local company recently employed 12 staff members in Artificial Intelligence, highlighting the growing potential in this area.
This development underscores Fiji’s capacity to diversify its outsourcing offerings and tap into more specialized markets, positioning itself as a competitive player in the global KPO landscape.
Government support and international partnerships
The Fijian government remains committed to supporting the outsourcing sector to maximize its benefits.
Kamikamica mentioned that partnerships are being explored with global companies, including tech giants like Google, which operates a large call center in the Philippines.
There is optimism that Fiji could capture a significant portion of this market in the future, further solidifying its position as a key player in the global outsourcing industry.
