‘Flexeteriat’ to rise in 2024, says workplace author
NEW YORK, UNITED STATES — Workplace author Julia Hobsbawm predicts that 2024 will see the rise of the “flexeteriat,” a new class of worker who values flexibility and freedom of choice above all else when it comes to how and where they work.
Hobsbawm, a columnist for Bloomberg Work Shift, made this prediction in the recently published Scoop Flex Report 2024, compiled by hybrid work planning platform Scoop Technologies.
In explaining her prediction, Hobsbawm stated that increased workplace flexibility has been a permanent shift coming out of the pandemic. She anticipates that this will fuel the rise of the “flexeteriat,” essentially gig workers who piece together income from multiple sources.
Revenue in the global gig economy totaled $3.8 trillion in 2022, according to a new report by Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA).
Aside from ‘flexetariat’, artificial intelligence (AI) and skills-based hiring are among the workforce trends in 2024, as stated by the Computing Technology Industry Association.
The Scoop report also included predictions from other thought leaders foreseeing continued growth in remote and hybrid work models.
However, survey data from Scoop suggests that companies may be more open to workplace flexibility than assumed, with 62% of U.S. companies now offering some form of location flexibility.
