Fraud investigation launched against call centers targeting Amazon, Microsoft customers

NEW DELHI, INDIA — India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken decisive action against fraudulent activities targeting international customers by filing a First Information Report (FIR) against 10 call centers.
This move follows serious complaints from two global tech giants, Amazon and Microsoft, who accused these call centers of defrauding customers through fake technical support schemes.
Allegations of deceptive practices
The CBI’s investigation was initiated after receiving a complaint from Microsoft. The complaint detailed how these call centers allegedly sent deceptive ‘pop-up’ messages to unsuspecting users, warning them of non-existent threats to their computers. Users were then urged to call a specific number, where call center operators reportedly exploited them financially under the guise of providing technical support.
In a parallel case, Amazon reported that the same call centers duped customers attempting to activate devices like the Amazon Fire Stick. The operators allegedly charged these customers for fraudulent technical support services.
Legal proceedings and public disclosure
These cases were initially registered on October 4 of the previous year. However, the details have only recently been made public following an order from a special court.
This disclosure has revealed the extent of the fraudulent operations and the coordinated efforts by these call centers to target foreign customers.
Impact on customers and corporate response
The fraudulent schemes not only caused financial losses to the victims but also damaged the reputations of the involved companies.
Both Amazon and Microsoft expressed their commitment to protecting their customers from such scams. They are actively cooperating with the CBI to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
Future implications
The CBI’s actions highlight the growing need for vigilance against cyber fraud, particularly as digital platforms become increasingly integral to daily life. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of cybersecurity measures and the role of law enforcement in maintaining digital trust.
As investigations continue, the CBI aims to dismantle these fraudulent networks and prevent the further exploitation of innocent customers. Collaboration between tech companies and law enforcement is crucial in the fight against cybercrime, ensuring that the digital space remains safe for all users.
Last year, Microsoft and Amazon themselves announced a strategic partnership with CBI to combat tech support scams and conduct raids on illegal call centers nationwide.
