Freelancer.com reports surge in creative jobs for 2023

CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES — Photography and video content creation surged as the top in-demand online jobs in 2023, according to the Freelancer Fast 50 report by Freelancer.com.
Analyzing over 1 million project postings on their platform, the study showed a significant 68.9% year-over-year increase in Adobe Lightroom job listings, totaling 3,841 and marking it as the fastest-growing skill. Videography followed closely behind, experiencing a 53.7% rise to 16,885 video production job posts.
The report also revealed that freelancers in the U.S. are charging up to $300 per hour for photography gigs, while $200 per hour for videography and video editing skills.
“Advances in generative AI are changing the way businesses are communicating and marketing themselves. A boom in video and photography services is a clear indication that there’s a shift towards visual, highly-produced content,” said Freelancer.com’s CEO Matt Barrie.
“We expect this trend to continue and are already seeing signs of video and marketing categories continuing to increase in 2024.”
Here are the top five fastest-growing freelancer skills in 2023 from 2022, according to Freelancer.com:
- Adobe Lightroom – 3,841 jobs (68.9%)
- Videography – 16,885 jobs (53.7%)
- User interface – 12,243 jobs (50.7%)
- Photography – 11,719 jobs (44.8%)
- Administrative support – 2,916 jobs (43.7%)
On the other hand, skills related to non-fungible tokens (NFTs), blockchain, and crypto faced extreme declines in demand as the hype around digital assets diminished.
As AI tools advance, the demand for human creativity and visual content continues ascending.
“AI can’t replace creativity, yet… What we are seeing is that our freelancers are moving up the stack. They’re evolving from just blog writers to editors. Moving from just illustrators to directors. Ultimately, AI is elevating our talent and improving efficiency and productivity in the process,” added Barrie.
