U.S. freelancing hits record high in 2023

CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES — Freelancing in the United States reached an all-time high, with 64 million Americans in 2023 or 38% of the national workforce.
The 10th annual “Freelance Forward” report of freelance services marketplace Upwork surveyed 3,000 professionals on freelancing trends. It revealed significant growth, with 4 million more freelancers compared to 2022.
According to Upwork, freelancing added $1.27 trillion to the U.S. economy this year.
“An increasing number of Americans are seeking greater flexibility, autonomy and earning power when it comes to their work, and they are finding it with freelancing,” said Margaret Lilani, VP of talent solutions at Upwork.
Key findings show freelancers were more likely to use artificial intelligence (AI) tools versus non-freelancers (20% vs 9% regular usage). This contrasts with a global survey that found 73% of freelancers worldwide use AI tools.
“They are quickly understanding the importance of upskilling to augment workflows and create better outcomes for clients,” Lilani added.
Nearly half (47%) offered skilled services in information technology (IT), marketing, and business consulting. A quarter (23%) created influencer content. Gen Z and Millennials dominated at 52% and 44%, respectively.
The future looks bright, as over 85% of freelancers believe the best is yet to come for independent work.
“It’s no surprise more and more professionals are seeking alternatives to traditional 9-to-5 models in favor of flexible work arrangements because of the control it provides over one’s career,” said Samer Bazzi, a full stack marketer who has freelanced on Upwork for over a decade.
