Generative AI to revolutionize India’s IT workforce

NEW DELHI, INDIA — A new study by software firm UnearthInsight reveals that generative artificial intelligence could impact around one per cent of India’s 5.4 million IT workers and generate around US$2-3 billion in revenue.
India’s $245-billion tech services industry employs roughly 300,000 individuals in sales and support roles.
Over the next three to five years, the tasks of 50,000 to 60,000 of these employees are projected to be influenced by the rise of AI.
This development doesn’t necessarily suggest job losses, as these roles might evolve to involve AI collaboration more actively.
“Google and OpenAI themselves say it will create additional jobs. There will be demand for new roles like prompt engineers and system consultants,” added UnearthInsight. Founder and CEO Gaurav Vasu.
The study also predicts an upgrade in job quality and productivity and a decline in reliance on full-time equivalents (FTEs).
Roles such as pre-sales, bid management, sales enablement, and solution architecture may get impacted by AI copilots doing lead generation or AI-curated sales content.
UnearthInsight expects India’s tech services sector to invest $50-100 million in generative AI solutions by FY25, unlocking an additional $2-3 billion revenue potential for the Indian IT industry within four to five years.
