ILLINOIS, UNITED STATES — A new survey reveals that younger generations are now significantly influencing their elders, overturning the traditional top-down model of knowledge transfer.

Research from Leo United Kingdom’s PopPulse report, which polled 2,000 Britons, indicates that 77% of adults have taken influence from Gen Z, learning lessons ranging from financial investing to mental health openness.

Knowledge flow reverses between generations

This shift implies that the culture has undergone considerable alteration, and age is no longer a prerequisite for becoming a source of valuable knowledge and life skills.

“Gen Z are the first generation truly adapted for modern life – agile enough to thrive in flux, fluent in contradiction, and wired for connection,” the report notes.

The sharing of advice between generations occurs every week, indicating that this is not a new trend but rather a component of intergenerational relationships today. This regular exchange highlights a new cultural dynamic where learning is a continuous, two-way street.

This intergenerational dynamic is fueled by a desire for closeness and shared learning. Notably, 72% of Gen Zers express a desire to spend more time with older generations, and 93% of the nation agrees that every generation should be open to learning from different age groups.

“Every youth generation comes in with new ideas, but what’s different now is the speed and visibility of their influence,” a social anthropologist said in the report.

Gen Z’s growing influence on older generations

According to the research, Gen Z influences parents to switch to digital banking or share AI tools like ChatGPT with grandparents. This continual sharing deepens bonds and positions Gen Z as translators of complexity in a screen-mediated world.

In a separate report by The Irish Sun, the areas where Gen Z is making its impact are quite utilitarian and designed to overcome the obstacles of contemporary life. Younger people are educating older people on valuable life lessons, including how to be capable of saying no without any form of shame, discussing mental health, and being body-positive.

The impact is spread to very material financial and domestic domains. Gen Z has also educated the older generation on how to monetize their interests, balance work and life, and even utilize certain gadgets.

On the financial front, they have provided information on how to invest through apps and start a side hustle, as well as their financial advice.

The once-clear directional flow of knowledge from old to young has now reversed, flattening the hierarchy of who teaches whom and demanding a culture of continuous, multi-directional learning in the modern workplace.

The PopPulse research concludes, “Gen Z are the family translators, but they also crave generational closeness – and intergenerational topics, fandoms, and experiences help deepen those bonds.”
