Gen Z reshapes engagement, workplace strategies

MANILA, PHILIPPINES — The workplace paradigm is shifting as companies re-evaluate their employee engagement and workplace strategies to accommodate Gen Z workers.
According to real estate firm Colliers, this generation — born between 1995 and 2010 — is redefining the professional landscape with their unique outlooks on work and work culture.
Raised amid digital innovation, global financial changes, social rights movements, and the COVID-19 pandemic, Gen Zs prioritize psychological well-being, personal growth, inclusion, and a sense of security in the workplace over compensation. They also highly value work-life balance and flexible working arrangements.
Citing Deloitte’s 2023 Gen Z and Millennial Survey, Colliers said companies are progressing in work-life balance, diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives.
However, despite their significant societal role, only 48% of Gen Z respondents believe businesses have a positive societal impact.
Environmental sustainability is another area where Gen Zers’ influence is evident. Around 55% research a company’s sustainability initiatives before accepting a job, and over 17% have left jobs due to environmental concerns.
Another study by Johns Hopkins University highlighted Gen Z’s comfort with gender fluidity and non-binary identities. About 88% of Gen Z respondents appreciated being asked their preferred pronouns, and 83% said an organization’s commitment to DEI was crucial to their employment choice.
In response, companies are enhancing their DEI initiatives and are reshaping office designs to foster collaboration and productivity while ensuring work-life balance.
Businesses are implementing smart and inclusive workplace designs that reflect their culture, promoting sustainable facility features, and continuously promoting employees’ mental health and well-being.
Colliers added that these efforts aim to attract Gen Z workers and secure the future of work in many industries.
