45% of managers find Gen Z toughest to manage – survey

LUCERNE, SWITZERLAND — A recent survey by Resume Genius, which involved 625 U.S. hiring managers, aimed to identify which generation is perceived as the most challenging in the workplace.
The findings revealed that 45% of managers consider Gen Z the most difficult to manage, followed by millennials (26%), Gen X (13%), and boomers (9%).
Turning Gen Z stereotypes into strengths
“Gen Zers might have a bad rep, but they have the power to transform workplaces for the better,” said Geoffrey Scott, senior hiring manager at Resume Genius.
“Gen Z has already shaken things up, but they’re not here to break things. They bring a unique blend of talent and bold ideas that can rejuvenate any workforce.”
The report outlines six strategies Gen Z can use to defy stereotypes and excel in multi-generational offices:
- Highlight tech savviness – Showcasing skills like social media, coding and cloud computing positions them as valuable tech assets.
- Cultivate a personal brand – Sixty-one percent of Gen Z already has or wants a personal brand, according to Morning Consult Pro. Tailoring their online presence to highlight desired skills can attract employers.
- Adapt communication styles – Gen Z must learn to alter their communication approach for different colleagues, using the appropriate mix of in-person, email, text and instant messaging.
Thirty-six percent of Gen Z aged 18-24 have over 1,000 unread emails, causing stress, anxiety, and even regret over how they communicate at work, according to a survey by language learning platform Babbel.
- Demonstrate initiative – Being proactive and open to learning are key traits that can set Gen Z apart. Volunteering for new projects and showing a readiness to take on additional responsibilities are recommended.
- Maintain professionalism online – Avoid publicly bashing former employers on platforms like #QuitTok, which could harm future career prospects.
- Foster collaboration – Gen Z can play a crucial role in promoting teamwork by introducing new tools and engaging in activities that enhance team dynamics.
