Gig economy soars to $3.8 trillion in 2022
CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES — Revenue in the global gig economy totaled $3.8 trillion in 2022, according to a new report by Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA).
The data from Global Gig Economy 2023 report reflect 18 countries representing 90% of global contingent spending.
SIA’s definition of the gig economy includes temporary workers hired through staffing agencies, direct-hire temporary workers with no agency, independent contractors, statement-of-work consultants at firms, and temporary workers from online talent platforms.
Independent contractors accounted for the largest share at $1.93 trillion or 50% of the total. Direct-hire temporary workers with no staffing agency contributed the second-highest revenue at $912 billion or 24% of the total.
Temporary workers from staffing firms generated $528 billion (14%), followed by online platform workers at $449 billion (8%) and statement-of-work consultants at $352 billion (7%).
“The gig economy offers enormous opportunities to the staffing industry over the next few years,” said Adam Pode, director of research in Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) and Asia-Pacific (APAC).
“Whether by assisting companies to find cross-border talent via a platform, helping independent contractors find work or building a system to attract direct hires, this report will help companies identify where the talent pools sit.”
The data covers key global markets like the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the United Kingdom among others.
