CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES — Google has implemented a significant policy change that drastically reduces the flexibility of its popular “Work from Anywhere” (WFA) program.

According to a report by The Tech Buzz, based on internal documents, starting this summer, even a single day of remote work will now consume an entire week of an employee’s annual four-week WFA allowance.

This move signals a major shift in the tech giant’s post-pandemic work strategy and aligns with a broader industry trend of curtailing remote work.

Redefining the remote work week

The new rule states that, “Whether you log 1 WFA day or 5 WFA days in a given standard work week, 1 WFA week will be deducted from your WFA weekly balance.”

This change means employees can no longer use the benefit for short-term needs without a heavy penalty, effectively forcing them to reserve it for longer, contiguous blocks of time or risk depleting their allocation rapidly.

The restriction is compounded by explicit geographical boundaries that separate WFA from the standard hybrid model. The Tech Buzz reports that the policy states, “WFA weeks cannot be used to work from home or nearby,” and cannot be used to work from a Google office in a separate state or country.

This creates a clear hierarchy of flexibility, positioning the WFA benefit as a tool for significant relocation only, while reinforcing the office as the primary and expected place of work for routine flexibility.

Industry-wide rollback of pandemic policies

The move by Google is a notable component of an industry-wide backlash against the remote work freedoms introduced during the COVID-19 crisis. It is not the company that is struggling to implement it; other tech giants have such mandates in place.

Microsoft has said it will require its staff to be in the office three days a week, and Amazon has told corporate workers to resume coming to the office five days a week, which unequivocally signals the end of the mass experiment of the pandemic that allowed many workers to work remotely.

Such a rollback is being imposed with severe consequences, which shows companies’ desire to turn the tide in the opposite direction. According to Google’s internal documents, violations of the updated WFA policy will result in disciplinary measures or dismissal.

This implementation follows other recent efforts, such as voluntary buyouts and informing remote employees that their positions were jeopardized unless they returned to offices, which constitute a premeditated, aggressive strategy to restore office-centric work cultures across the industry.
