Guyana targets 15,000 new BPO jobs

MAHAICA-BERBICE, GUYANA — The government of Guyana aims to create over 15,000 new business process outsourcing (BPO) jobs nationwide by 2025, with a focus on Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice).
The Ministry of Housing and Water recently invited construction bids for two modern call centers in Hope Town and Mahaicony, which are located in the region. The new call centers will boost essential public services while generating thousands of jobs.
Interested companies can submit bids until January 3, 2024, based on requirements in Guyana’s 2003 Procurement Act. The Act mandates competitive bidding procedures and selection based on value for money criteria.
Studies conducted by the Guyana Office for Investment identified Regions Two, Three, Five, Six, and Ten as prime locations for BPO industry growth. Region Five offers an ideal location in terms of workforce capacity and infrastructure.
Guyana’s young, educated English-speaking population, proximity to North America, and favorable time zone give it a competitive edge in the global BPO industry. The government sees the sector as key for economic diversification, youth employment and digital literacy.
The new call centers align with the Guyana administration’s balanced national development strategy, which focuses on investments in education, internet connectivity and infrastructure upgrades across all regions.
