Healthcare high school to open in New York in 2025

NEW YORK, UNITED STATES — Medical firm Northwell Health and the New York Public City Schools will open a healthcare-focused high school named The Northwell School of Health Sciences in the school year 2025-26.
The campus will be located in Woodside, Queens, and will accommodate 900 students at capacity. Graduates of the program will gain work experience and access to job opportunities after graduation in the fields of nursing, diagnostic medicine, physical therapy, and behavioral health.
Northwell Health and the New York Public City schools are part of 13 major health and school systems across America in the $250 million initiative. Students will have access to a healthcare curriculum, which includes on-the-job learning and the opportunity to receive credentials and certifications.
In sum, the schools will serve nearly 6,000 students at full capacity – all of whom have the opportunities to work in the healthcare industry.
Bloomberg Philanthropies, the charity firm of businessman and former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, will provide an initial investment of $24.9 million in the school project.
“By combining classroom learning with hands-on experience, these specialized healthcare high schools will prepare students for careers with opportunities for growth and advancement. America needs more healthcare workers, and we need a stronger, larger middle class — and this is a way to help accomplish both goals,” Bloomberg said.
New York City has over 750,000 healthcare professionals and is projected to face a nursing shortage of almost 40,000 by 2030.
