India sees 55% rise in white-collar gig work

NEW DELHI, INDIA — The Indian job market is witnessing a transformation, with 55% of firms hiring white-collar gig workers, according to talent solutions provider CIEL HR Services.
This shift attributes to the allure of gig work, which offers the flexibility to undertake varied projects and be one’s own boss. Approximately 38% of workers chose gig work for its diverse assignments, and 24% appreciated its independence.
The survey also showed a gender-neutral appeal for gig work, with 41% of male and 40% of female respondents valuing its diverse work experiences.
Aditya Narayan Mishra, CEO of CIEL HR, said that gig employment is becoming increasingly popular due to its cost-effectiveness, scalability, and access to specialized skills.
However, 50% of gig workers also showed interest in shifting to full-time jobs, highlighting the desire for job stability. The unpredictable nature of work, inconsistent project opportunities, and fluctuating hours were primary concerns for 32% of respondents.
Additionally, the absence of social security (24%) makes full-time employment more appealing to gig workers.
Mishra stressed the need for a balanced approach, adding that businesses need to leverage the benefits of gig employment while acknowledging the rising importance of providing stability and growth opportunities.
CIEL’s report was based on responses from 1200+ white-collar gig workers encompassing a diverse range of age groups, gender, years of experience, and geographical locations.
