Indian city’s IT sector sees 70% annual growth
KOLKATA, INDIA — Kolkata’s information technology (IT) sector is growing at an extraordinary annual rate of 70%, as reported by the Department of Information Technology and Electronics.
This rapid expansion is credited to proactive state government initiatives, including the establishment of the West Bengal Information Technology Services (WBITES) and the West Bengal Electronics Industry Development Corporation (Webel). These organizations aim to attract investments and foster innovation in the region.
State IT Minister Babul Supriyo has also announced plans to introduce a semiconductor policy ahead of the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) to lure foreign investors.
Local IT firms expand into global markets
Kolkata-based companies are leveraging this growth to establish a global footprint. BluCocoon Digital, a firm founded in 2020, specializes in AI-driven analytics, IoT integration, and cloud migration.
Shantanu Bhattacharya, MD and CEO of BluCocoon Digital, emphasized the company’s focus on sustainability and data privacy. “We’re seeing rapid growth in AI adoption and IoT for smarter connectivity. We plan to expand into international markets,” Bhattacharya stated.
Somnetics, another prominent player, has launched operations in the United States, European Union, and Middle East while serving 500 domestic clients.
Founder and CEO Shantanu Som highlighted their investments in innovation, including an AI Lab in Kolkata, an engineering center in Bengaluru, and their goal to expand into Africa while rolling out ‘Made in India’ software products globally.
Deep-tech innovation gains momentum
The city is also witnessing a shift toward deep-tech innovation. Rohit Sarkar, co-founder of Distronix, shared that his industrial IoT firm has doubled its growth year-on-year for three years.
“We have grown almost 2x year-on-year for the past three years, and we are working towards maintaining the same growth rate over the next four years,” he stated.
Abhishek Rungta, founder of Indus Net Technologies (INT), echoed these sentiments, highlighting Kolkata’s transformation into a hub for global IT services.
Cybersecurity becomes a growing priority
As the IT sector flourishes, so does the demand for cybersecurity solutions. Indian School of AntiHacking (Isoah) Data Securities Pvt Ltd has stepped up to address this need by working with state agencies like CID and Kolkata Police to prevent hacking incidents.
“With the rise in IT services demand, the need for protective tools against hacking is also increasing.” said Sandeep Sengupta, director of Isoah.
With its thriving IT ecosystem and strategic initiatives, Kolkata is emerging as a global hub for innovation and technology-driven solutions.
