Indian IT giants urge employees back to offices

NEW DELHI, INDIA — Major Indian IT companies including Wipro, Capgemini, and LTIMindtree are informally encouraging employees to return to the office for at least half their working week as client demand faces challenges linked to the global economic downturn.
While not yet a formal mandate across organizations, the move marks a shift from the work-from-home era for the country’s $227 billion IT sector.
Wipro, India’s fourth-largest IT services company with over 250,000 employees globally, has adopted a “50-50 split” hybrid model requiring staff to work on-site 50% of the time. Capgemini, which employs over 350,000 people worldwide, is requesting employees come to the office three days a week but is considering increasing office attendance.
The push for increased office presence comes as IT companies face slowing growth. Tata Consultancy Services, India’s largest IT services firm, recently sent a similar informal message to staff. IT hubs like Pune and Bengaluru have seen multiple companies issue return-to-office guidance.
While not yet mandatory, the shift is seen as a strategy to boost productivity and limit data breaches as the sector grapples with uncertain near-term revenues. The future is expected to remain hybrid, with flexibility a priority for staff and clients.
