NEW DELHI, INDIA — The top three Indian IT companies, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys, and Wipro, collectively trained over 775,000 employees in generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) skills by the end of fiscal year 2024.

This achievement significantly exceeds the forecast made by the IT industry body nasscom, which had estimated that around 650,000 employees across the IT sector would receive GenAI training during the same period.

Leading the charge

TCS, as India’s largest IT services company, has taken the lead by training approximately 300,000 of its employees in GenAI skills.

Milind Lakkad, TCS’ Chief Human Resources Officer, emphasized the importance of AI in the company’s future, stating, “AI will be the very fabric of the company. We are ensuring that everybody in the organization has foundational skills and then we build expertise on it.”

Infosys follows closely, having trained 250,000 of its staff in GenAI capabilities. Wipro is not far behind, with over 225,000 employees trained in AI fundamentals and responsible AI use.

Subha Tatavarti, Wipro’s Chief Technology Officer, highlighted the company’s commitment to AI education, saying, “Over 220,000 of our employees have completed training on AI fundamentals and the responsible use of AI.”

Future plans and industry impact

Other companies like HCLTech and LTIMindtree are also making strides in GenAI training. HCLTech plans to train 50,000 employees in FY25, and LTIMindtree has already trained over 20,000 employees.

The focus on GenAI training is driven by the increasing demand for work in this space, which, although not yet a significant revenue contributor, has become a priority for clients.

This is reflected in the deal sizes, with TCS announcing GenAI deals worth $900 million and Accenture reaching a $1.1 billion milestone in total contract value for GenAI.

The concerted effort by India’s leading IT firms to upskill their workforce in GenAI not only showcases their commitment to staying at the forefront of technological innovation but also sets a new benchmark for the global IT industry.
