India’s IT-BPO sector urges gov’t to remove power banking restrictions

India’s Information Technology and Business Process Outsourcing (IT-BPO) industry urged its government to remove the 10% power banking limit and restrictions on the voluntary purchase of electricity to help the sector increase their consumption of renewable energy.
In its suggestion to the Ministry of Power, the IT industry organization National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) said that these policies will hinder the companies who intend to use only renewable energy for their operations.
Many IT-BPM companies in India are already shifting to renewable energy sources for their power needs. Several data center companies – which consume a significant amount of power – have committed themselves into utilizing renewable sources for their operations.
The sector is requesting the ministry to allow the annual banking of renewable energy without consumption limit and procurement of green energy within the scope of renewable purchase obligations.
These suggestions have come after the Ministry of Power asked for feedback on the newly released Electricity Rules 2021 which aim to increase the use of renewable energy by the companies in the country.
