India’s BPO hiring down 18% in April

MUMBAI, INDIA — The Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry in India suffered an 18% decline in hiring last April amid the ongoing global slowdown.
According to the Naukri JobSpeak Index, last month’s hiring activity was dominated by non-tech sectors such as real estate (+21%), oil and gas (+20%), insurance (+13%), and banking (+11%) sectors.
Meanwhile, the IT industry recorded a 27% decrease last month, followed by retail with 23% and education technology (EdTEch) with 21%.
Naukri.com Chief Business Officer Pawan Goyal said India’s IT-focused metros “exhibited a cautious hiring sentiment” while emerging cities such as Ahmedabad and Vadodara “continue to shine.”
Overall, the demand for white-collar jobs in the country dropped by five percent in April compared to last year, with 2,715 jobs advertised.
