Indra sells BPO business to Teknei for $112Mn

MADRID and BILBAO, SPAIN — Spanish tech provider Indra has sold its business process outsourcing (BPO) division to Bilbao-based technology firm Teknei for €96.6 million (US$112.4 million).

The deal, encompassing operations in seven countries, transfers over 5,000 employees and is positioned by both companies as a strategic move to refine their market focus and accelerate growth.

Indra streamlines, Teknei scales via BPO buy

Indra is a global technology and defense company that runs its main business units: Indra, the defense, air traffic, and space systems unit, and Minsait, the substantial power of digital transformation in Spain and Latin America.

The group employs more than 60,000 individuals across more than 100 locations worldwide, with a new strategy to sell its non-core BPO business and focus on its high-tech roadmap. The company ranked #14 in the OA500, an objective index of the world’s top 500 outsourcing companies.

On the other hand, Teknei, a technology group based in Bilbao established in 2010, offers business-wide consulting, software development, and IT solutions that rebrand organizations and make them more competitive in the global landscape.

Indra exits BPO to double down on tech

The sale is presented as an imperative element of Indra’s Leading the Future Strategic Plan, which seeks to increase its focus on specific priority areas.

“The operation has been designed in such a way as to ensure the continuity of the service to the customers and maintain the jobs of the professionals working in the BPO business,” said Indra Group CEO José Vicente de los Mozos.

In particular, Indra is planning to focus on defense, aerospace, and advanced digital technologies, in which it sees an opportunity to create market-leading pan-European solutions.

Indra simplified its operations by selling the BPO unit, which brought revenue of €196 million (US$228 million) in 2024. According to de los Mozos, the move will enable it to proceed with its strategic plan and concentrate on its roadmap priorities.

The arrangement has been designed to allow the continuation of customer service and the employment of the affected workforce, making the corporate pivot easier.

Teknei expands BPO footprint and talent base

For Teknei, the acquisition is a calculated expansion play to consolidate its market position and achieve scale. The purchase of Indra’s established BPO business, with its large clientele in banking, insurance, and public administration, immediately strengthens Teknei’s leadership in the technology service and business process outsourcing sector.

This operation is squarely aligned with Teknei’s own strategic growth objectives. CEO Joseba Lekube called the transaction a bold move to scale and offer even more holistic, innovative solutions to clients.

“The incorporation will deliver vital capabilities for complex processes and highly specialized talent, providing more comprehensive and innovative solutions suited to our clients’ needs,” he said.

The acquisition is an immediate tool to drive Teknei onto a faster growth path, enabling the company to achieve its goal of becoming a company with a turnover of at least €1 billion  (US$112.4 million) in 2030.

The agreement includes a robust social clause that guarantees the transfer of approximately 5,000 BPO professionals to Teknei. They are hired with at least two years of employment after closing and maintain the current working conditions and seniority.

Both corporations underscore the fundamental principle that the sale must maintain smooth operational and service continuity for the unit’s customer base by transferring contracts, technology, and teams in a well-organized manner.

Indra sees hope in Teknei’s experience in the sector to offer new talent new opportunities, whereas Teknei notes the importance of incorporating these human resources into its service provision.
