Jamaica finds it difficult to hire new BPO workers

The Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry in Jamaica is having a hard time finding new employees, said Business Process Industry Association of Jamaica (BPIAJ) President Gloria Henry.
In an interview with Jamaica Observer, Henry stated “the numbers are dropping” in terms of responses to the sector’s job postings.
The BPIAJ president thinks that the increase in overseas opportunities and remote positions with global companies contributed to the country’s “shrinking employee pool.” She added that other locals are simply “not employable right now” in the BPO industry.
Henry predicts that a greater need for training and development is needed to prepare prospective employees for an upcoming stream of BPO jobs that are coming in Jamaica.
Currently, the outsourcing sector has over 46,000 employees, up 3,000 from pre-pandemic levels.
Henry disclosed that they are aiming for 50,000 in March 2022 as “there is robust organic growth going on now with the different sites” in the country. About 10 BPO sites are expected to open in Jamaica between July 2021 to March 2022.
