Japan to launch strict digital nomad visa in March

TOKYO, JAPAN — Japan is set to launch a new six-month digital nomad visa in March, targeting remote workers from 49 countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States.

While welcomed by many nomads eager to experience Japan beyond typical tourist stays, the visa comes with steep eligibility requirements.

Applicants must prove an annual income of at least 10 million yen (approximately US$75,000), hold international health insurance, and will not receive a residence card. After six months, the visa cannot be renewed.

While requirements are high, the fastest-growing remote working hub in 2023 offers immense appeal and is poised to draw nomads despite barriers.

Japan’s Justice Minister Ryuji Koizumi said in a news conference that digital nomads “can become a source of innovation.”

“While many countries are making efforts to attract them, we hope those people will work in Japan, too,” he added.

Southeast Asia has become a top destination for nomads thanks to affordable costs, reliable internet, and nice weather, according to Brittany Loeffler, Head of Operations at Nomad Embassy. However, eligibility criteria in countries like Thailand can be difficult to meet for many.

Other Asian countries like Malaysia, South Korea, and the Philippines have also introduced digital nomad visas, each with varying requirements, reflecting the growing recognition of the $800 billion economy of this mobile workforce.

“To be honest, it doesn’t seem that Asia is introducing ‘easy’ digital nomad visas. They are requiring higher salaries compared to Europe’s digital nomad visas,” said Loeffler.

Portugal was the top destination for American visa applicants on Deel in 2023, with its golden visa driving interest.

Spain, United Kingdom, and United Arab Emirates were also popular options, especially Dubai, which along with the Spanish cities of Malaga, Alicante and Valencia, ranked highest for expat life satisfaction according to Internations.
