JPMorgan CEO predicts AI could enable shorter workweeks
NEW YORK, UNITED STATES — JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon recently predicted that advancements in artificial intelligence could enable shorter workweeks for future generations.
In an interview with Bloomberg TV, Dimon said AI may contribute to a future norm of a 3.5 day workweek, down from the standard 40-hour, 5-day week.
“Your children are going to live to 100 and not have cancer because of technology,” Dimon said. “And literally they’ll probably be working three-and-a-half days a week.”
Dimon emphasized that thousands of JPMorgan employees already utilize AI across the company, including in research, trading, customer service and other functions.
He believes AI will continue to create efficiencies that could reduce the need for humans to work a traditional 40-hour week.
Dimon’s vision of a shorter workweek may prioritize efficiency over flexibility. He has been critical of remote and hybrid work arrangements, advocating for leaders to be accessible to their teams.
However, Dimon’s comments focused on efficiency over flexibility. He has been a longtime advocate for in-office work, requiring managing directors to be in the office 5 days per week since April 2022.
In the same interview, Dimon acknowledged AI will eliminate some jobs but said displaced employees could be redeployed within JPMorgan. The company hires around 30,000 people annually.
While optimistic about AI’s potential, Dimon also acknowledged potential downsides like job losses. A recent Goldman Sachs report estimated AI could displace 300 million jobs globally.
Overall, Dimon struck an optimistic tone, predicting AI will both enable shorter workweeks and bring major advancements in areas like healthcare. But his remarks also underscored the significant disruption AI may bring to the workforce.
