Leading tech talent hotspots in Canada, U.S. revealed

TEXAS, UNITED STATES — The San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, New York Metro, Washington, D.C., and Toronto are the leading tech talent markets in 2023, according to CBRE’s Scoring Tech Talent report.
The report highlights “opportunity markets” across Canada, Latin America, and the U.S. Midwest and South, providing companies with an untapped talent pool and more cost-effective expansion options.
From 2017 to 2022, the San Francisco Bay Area led in tech job creation, followed by Toronto and Montreal.
Meanwhile, Vancouver, Calgary, Waterloo Region, Edmonton, and Madison saw the highest tech job growth rates.
Around 40% of the tech workforce in the U.S. and Canada are employed within the tech industry, with the highest concentrations found in the San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, and Austin.
In stark contrast, Ottawa and Sacramento (government sector) and Jacksonville, Charlotte, and Hartford (finance, insurance, and real estate) recorded high concentrations of tech talent in non-tech industries.
Tech professionals, on average, earn about 16% above the U.S. average wage, with the highest wages seen in the San Francisco Bay Area and Seattle. Notably, the San Francisco Bay Area dethroned Seattle as the region with the highest concentration of software engineers in the tech industry.
